STAR FLEET: BRAZILIAN DUO’S TIGHT SAILING HELPS EXTEND THEIR LEAD

Brazilians Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada have extended their overall lead to six points on Day 12 of the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships thanks to two good results on Wednesday and the failure of their closest competitors to place well.
Published on 14/12/11
Scheidt and Prada won Race 7, the first for the day, 40 seconds clear and recovered from seventh early in Race 8 to finish third.

The Brazilians are now on 30 points, six points clear of Mark Mendelblatt and Brian Faith (USA) who are second overall.

“We did really well, one and three on this very shifty day, as there was a lack of wind in the racing area. We are very happy with the results for sure”, said Bruno Prada.

The Star fleet has two races on Friday before Saturday’s Medal Race.

“We are pretty happy, we have one more day and we have to do good regattas because we have the German and the American not far. Now we can start to think about which two or three guys we have to sail close to”, Prada added.

Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki from Poland were ranked second on overall points after Tuesday’s competition, but were forced to quit Wednesday’s first race after receiving a second yellow flag.

“It was a really unlucky situation for us as it was our third penalty for the regatta. It means disqualification without discard. I can’t believe what happened today, but it was really tough for us”, said Zycki.

In third place overall is the German duo, Robert Stanjek and Frithjof Kleen, on 43 points.

STAR FLEET: INJURY FORCES BRITISH CHAMPIONS OUT OF THE ISAF WORLDS

British Olympic Champions Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson withdrew from Tuesday’s races due to injury and say they may not sail again at the Perth 2011 ISAF World Championships.
Published on 13/12/11
Percy had been suffering back pain after Monday’s races but was determined to finish the first race Tuesday. However, when he and Simpson received their second yellow flag of the regatta and were forced to resign, Percy was brought to shore for treatment.

Simpson said: “We had an okay run, but Iain hurt his back and was in tears. It looks like it’s his lower back, but we don’t know yet. No way could we have raced the second race.”

“It’s frustrating; sadly this is the second event in a row Iain has injured himself. He injured his ankle last time,” he said. “I guess we won’t be sailing, but we never rule anything out.”

Shortly after the race, Percy said on his Twitter account: “My back fully went today half way through the first race. Unfortunately the end of the championships and the beginning of a few weeks of physio.”

On the penalty that ended their race, Simpson said: “Sadly we picked up a yellow flag and we don’t know why – we’re still confused.”

Race 5 was won by Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki (POL), who led for the entire course.

Closely behind in second place were Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada (BRA), well clear of the third placed German team, Johannes Polgar and Markus Koy.

In the sixth race, Scheidt and Prada had to settle for another second place after crossing the finish just two seconds behind Swedish pair Fredrik Loof and Max Salminen.

Finishing in third and with only one second separating them from the Brazilians were Kusznierewicz and Zycki.

After six races, Scheidt and Prada move into first position overall. Mendelblatt and Fatih (USA) and Kusznierewicz and Zycki (POL) trail the Brazilians by only one point.

STAR: GREAT BRITAIN CREW TAKE A HEALTHY LEAD IN GUSTY WINDS AND ROUGH SEAS

There was another outstanding performance from the British Olympic Champions Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson at the ISAF Worlds Monday, consolidated their first place position in the overall standings after race four of the Star fleet.
Published on 12/12/11
Percy and Simpson have a total of 16 points while Mark Mendelblatt and Brian Fatih (USA) are on 28 points with Germany’s Robert Stanjek and Frithjof Kleen just behind them on 30.

“We had a good day today. We weren’t going very well but we hung in and fought hard,” said Percy. “My body is a bit bruised and battered for it but it’s okay”.

In race three, Norwegian team Eivind Melleby and Petter Morland Pedersen took first followed closely by Aimilios Papathanasiou and Antonios Tsotras of Greece.

The fight for third was close with Aimilios Papathanasiou and Antonios Tsotras of Greece just making it putting Germany’s Johannes Babendererde and Timo Jacobs in fourth place.

The outcome of race four saw the Swedish pair Fredrik Loof and Max Salminen take first place followed by Brazil’s Robert Scheidt and Bruno Prada.

Third went to Ireland’s Peter O’Leary and David Burrows while British pair Percy and Simpson were fourth position.

With six more races until the Medal Race the British are aware of the obstacles to come.

“There is still a long way to go, we’re not super quick, so not confident we will get too far but we will keep battling to the end,” he said.

2011 North American Championships – Pt II

Day 3

With the event being in jeopardy as being a non-event, the Race Committee has us at the club for a 9:30 first gun. Upon arrival, there is a light, but steady, breeze from the SE. We splash the boats and off we go to the race course. We test the sail settings and head back down to the start area. Unfortunately the winds go lighter and at 9:30 disappear altogether. The Race Committee puts up the postpone flag and we head back to the club to wait ashore. The wind goes to nothing so the fleet is towed back in, except for 3 die hards who insist upon sailing in. (Cramer is last to get in by 11:00)

The Race Committee postpones for 2 hours (until 12:30). Stu Hebb decides to pack up and leave. At 12:30, still only a zephyr of wind so we get postponed for another hour. Arthur Anisov and Dave Caesar, decide to go for a swim around the first club racing mark (about 600 yards offshore) The zephyrs start to fill but not enough so we are postponed again for another hour. At 2:15 the postpone flags are dropped and we head back out to the race. The seabreeze wind has filled in from the SW . As we check in, the Race Committee asks permission to start early so we start at 3:15.

We have a good first race in about 8-10kts of wind. We get to the first weather mark in about 7th place but lose a couple of places to finish 10th.

In the second race, we get stuck at the start line with no wind but are able to tack out and get some clear air. Unfortunately a boat tacks on our line and heads up too high so is too slow and gets rolled by a couple of windward boats so we get pinned in and cannot get out. By the time we are able to tack, we take the transoms of 5 or 6 boats. We round the first mark in last place. We are able to pass a couple of boats on the next upwind and downwind leg to finish 24th, just as the sun goes down. We haul and clean up the boat in the dark.

Day 4

We again are required to arrive for a 9:30 first gun. The water is glassy smooth, not even a hint of wind. We are postponed on shore. Some boats have launched but we decide to keep our boat out and if there is no wind at noon we will take apart the boat and get it ready for transport. 12:00 still no wind but we decide to wait as the wind is starting to fill in providing a glimmer of hope. The Race Committee does not like the direction so continues the postponement.

Arthur Anisov and Dave Caesar decide to go out for a swim. Tom Londrigan and Bill Allen decide to go with them. They arrive back ashore at 1pm, just as the postponement flag is dropped. We have 1 hour to get out to the race course. We quickly launch and go.

Good 10+ its of wind enables us to get to the course quickly. The Race Committee again asks for permission to start early so we are off. The waves build to about a foot.

We are doing pretty well until we get to the windward mark and a couple of boats tack in front of us so we are very slow getting around the mark. The downwind run now has some waves to sail down.

Barbara Vosbury is taking some penalty turns and hears a loud bang at the spreaders and thinks that her rig has broken. They check it out but nothing seems to be broken. Upon closer inspection she realizes that the spreader bracket has broken. They finish the race but head back to the club and skip the last race.

On the upwind, we go left but right gets a right shift so we end up nearly last to round the mark. We get a good wave and a puff of breeze to be able to pass a boat right at the finish to salvage a 19th finish.

In the second race, we get a good startd and get to the first mark in about 10th spot. The waves have grown to about 2 feet so there’s better opportunity for speed downwind. About half way down we cross gybes with Jon Vandermolen. As we separate, there’s a crash and his rig has come down. On the second upwind, we go left again but right turns out to be slightly favoured so we lose a couple of spots. On the second downwind we go wide for the bigger waves and pass a couple of boats to finish 13th.

Congrats to George Szabo and Mark Strube for winning the event with an impressive 3 bullets on the last 3 races.

Star North Americans

Greetings from Tampa FL. We sailed a warm up regatta, the Ding Schoonmaker Cup Regatta. Very shifty winds today. In the third race we were in the front group and got hit with a 40 degree wind shift that put us in last spot. We managed to climb back up the fleet to finish 14th in the race. Overall, we finished 14th, but that was good enough to win First in the Grandmaster division (skipper over 60).

Day 1
First gun is at 1100 hours and the winds are light and patchy. First upwind leg we are doing well and round 5th. On the downwind leg, left side gets way more wind; Lars Grael (BRA) passes us like we standing still. On the third upwind leg we finally get a wind shift in our favour. We pick up a couple boats to the right but lose a bunch to the left to finish 15th. We then take a long slow ride back down the course to the start line. The winds have gone lighter, patchier and shifty. We try a couple of starts but get called back before the sequence finishes. The fleet starts to edge back towards the club and the Race Committee finally calls it for a day.

Day 2.

We have an early start. 9:30 first gun. Winds are lighter than Sunday. At the first start the sequence gets called as the winds shifts around 40 degrees. After a short delay and wind goes back and we try again. At the start we head left. George Szabo rolls us so we tack under. About half way up the leg, boats on the right are about 500 yds ahead. Where did that come from? Boats on the left are way back. We gybe at the mark and head down the left side, passing those that had merely set down the right. A trio of porpoises surface and swim our bow wake. Very cool. We are keeping the wind but the wind dies at the mark and about 20 boats are turning around the left gate mark. We get stuck and are forced right. The winds get even lighter. The wind fills back in unfortunately from the left and we are stuck, watching the entire fleet get air and go. The only boats behind us are further right. We round the weather mark hoping that the wind will die at the mark again but it doesn’t. We finish 26th out of 28 boats.

Tomorrow is another race but winds are expected to be even lighter.
